Accommodation
There are increasing numbers of reasonable places to stay in Kyoto, some with extended-stay programs. Several are very reasonable, but as can be expected, are often booked far in advance especially in the spring and autumn.
Staying one night in a traditional inn, sleeping on the futon on the tatami flooring and enjoying the prepared meal is a treat and one I recommend. However, guests must be aware that the bedding is put away after breakfast and not put out until after dinner making a mid-day rest difficult. Meal times are decided as are the menus which are based on seasonal offerings although guests may be asked if they prefer Japanese or "Western" breakfast, meaning eggs, toast, juice and coffee. Because food is included in the reservation, a fee is charged when canceling close to the arrival date.
For comfort and convenience, most Japanese stay at hotels when traveling. Unlike inns, the guests can return to their rooms for a mid-day rest if they so desire. Several hotels have kitchenettes so guests may prepare their own food or buy prepared dishes at the supermarket or department store basements and eat them in the comfort of their rooms.
The hotels listed below are all centrally located, a single bus ride or walk from the downtown area. All have some English speaking staff.
First Group
The first group have extended-stay facilities and are very reasonably priced.
When dialing from abroad, first push the country code 81, then the Kyoto area code 75. When dialing in Japan, push the area code 075.

Fifth Group
The fifth group is temples which offer accommodation. These small temples house the priest and his family and expect travelers to observe the quiet and restful nature of the setting. Breakfast is served and guests may be required to rise early and return early at night. There are many temples in which to stay, but they do not advertise nor do they have homepages. Most charge about Y5,000 per person a night and offer a simple breakfast. English is spoken in the three listed below. (Dera designates a temple; in a sub-temple.)
